Jeff Su’s 5 Golden Rules of Perfect Resume

Jeff Su is a product marketer at Google. And has a bunch of achievements on his belt that equips him to helps tech job seekers with a bunch of tech skills.

Having mentored a bunch of students over the years, this is what he suggests to build the PERFECT Resume:

1. Include a presentable LinkedIn profile

A resume with a hyperlinked LinkedIn profile sees a higher interview conversion rate. Make sure the linkedin profile is well-developed and all the details are filled. Also, don’t forget to keep posting because a dead profile might hurt your chances.

2. Include the right keywords and skills

If you are applying to a big company, the resumes do not get checked by humans but machines called ATS or Applicant tracking systems. These softwares scan resumes for job-related keywords and skills to filter the applicants better. So make sure you include relevant keywords as it directly increases your resume's visibility.

Pro Tip: Custom make your resume to align better with the job description for better screening results.

3. Show your achievements with metrics

Resumes ultimately are a game of standing out. And the quickest way to stand out in a market where a bunch of people are applying, is to simply demonstrate competence.

And you do that the best by showing your past achievements, with numbers. Adding metrics as bullet points clarifies and highlights your achievements in the resume. Making it easier for the ATS as well as your recruiter to choose you over others.

4. The right length of a resum

Although there is no “Right length”, it definitely is smart to keep it a length that does not look like you have not put any effort or tried to cram everything in it. In our experience, maintaining a resume length between 475 and 600 words is ideal!

5. Avoid cliches

Do us a favor and eliminate buzzwords that lack value from your resume. Anything taht does not give a very concrete idea about what you did, how you did it, and what you acheived, is better kept outside that page.

Words like “Exceptional”, “creative”, “organizational”, “team player”, are considered common and redundant language in resumes. So stay clear of these and the likes unless you do not have any better alternative.

Can AI Write a Good Resume?

The speed at which AI made its debut is incredible. After the launch of ChatGPT on 30 Nov 2022, the AI world skyrocketed.

It’s 2024 and AI writing tools can produce creatively written content and can understand complex material. And this capability is making its mark on challenging tasks like resume creation.

Using AI to write resumes is indeed a great advantage. It can help with maintaining a consistent format, producing personalized content, and keyword optimization. But, it's important to note that AI made content is not your final content. You need to change it afterwards.

AI is there to create content but human review and fine-tuning are essential.

Even if you can take advantage of AI's efficiency and insights, don't forget to modify and personalize the material to highlight your own experiences and voice.

Your resume is your personal story, and telling it in your way is irreplaceable.

The combination of the AI assistant and your human touch will create a truly professional and impactful summary.
