You don’t have to go to the top university to get your dream job

Secrets to land off-campus jobs

“The University of British Columbia’s placement rate for MBA was 88% in 2022. Median base salaries started from USD 67000.

Let’s be real, we all have dreamt of attending top universities because everyone wanted to get such on-campus placements.

But only some get placed. Some of us don’t even get admissions.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get placed at all.

In this issue of The Recruitment Letter by Recruit.net, we will be sharing some of the best-kept secrets to landing an off-campus job.

In today’s edition, we will talk about:

  • How do you start applying for off-campus jobs👨‍💻

  • How do you impress employers with a solid Cover Letter🤩

  • Best-kept secrets to land off-campus jobs

Apply to Off-campus jobs the RIGHT way.

Before applying, you need to sort out a few things:

  • Which industry do you want to work in?

  • Are your skills complementing your desired role?

  • Create a master resume based on that.

1. Apply Manually

Once you have completed your resume, you can start scouting for jobs. Many platforms post opportunities daily.

  • Directly search on Google WITH keywords

Most people miss this hack, but you can find excellent opportunities in this way.

For example, if you are looking for social media manager jobs in Chicago, write “social media manager jobs, Chicago.

Many opportunities will come up. You might even see a few new job boards you learned about.

  • Do Boolean Search

Social media is a great place to find jobs. Go to X (Twitter) or LinkedIn and type keywords in the search bar.

Let’s take the same social media manager example.

In the search bar, type:

“Social Media Manager” + “Jobs”

You will see many posts looking for such jobs. You can add filters like location and job type, such as remote or contractual.

  • Job Boards

The best way to find off-campus jobs is through job boards. There are so many platforms that help you look for the right jobs.

Some of them are:

  1. Recruit.net

  2. LinkedIn Jobs

  3. Indeed

  4. Monster Jobs

  5. Simply Hiring

2. Find Referrals

Referrals are a great way to land jobs after college, but you need a solid network.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Speak to your professors in the college to see if they can recommend you.

  2. Ask your friends and family if they have some leads

  3. Get in touch with the college alumni through common groups

3. Create an account on LinkedIn

Consider your profile as a resume and fill out the headline, banner, and about us page accordingly. Don’t copy-paste your resume into the About Us section. Instead, write about your skills and why you wish to work in an industry.

Start creating three posts per week. Talk about your college experiences, what you learned, and the different ideas you can bring.

Now comes the main part- Networking!

Send connection requests to recruiters in your niche and people from your industry. Once they accept your request, start a conversation. Ask recruiters if they have a vacancy.

Start a conversation with people in your niche. Ask them what it’s like to work in this field, how they landed their first job, and some tips to start. Sometimes, people might end up helping you.

The Cover Letter can make your break your application ⛓️‍💥

Many people skip sending a cover letter with their resume. You don’t want to do that. Cover letters can help you stand out from the crowd and can be so influential that they could help you get an interview on their own merit.

WARNING🚨: DO NOT SEND GENERIC COVER LETTERS

Instead, do this:

Focus on Your Opening

Don’t start with the overused line- I'm applying for the ad I saw online

It doesn’t grab any attention, and it tells the employer that they are great and that it could benefit you to work with them (this might be true). However, it doesn’t make a great opening line.

So, go for the Power Impact Technique.

It's a two-step process: First, you analyze the job and determine the essential skills the employer seeks. Next, you immediately address how you can cater to those needs.

You open your cover letter using this technique.

For example:

“Led the college event, “BBA Fest,” where I mentored 10 participants on how to put up a stall and market it to get 25,000 visitors in a weekend.”

“Got 125k impressions on my LinkedIn profile in 30 days.”

The first example would work if you are applying to a marketing or event firm, and the second one would work if you are looking for a social media management job.

You can also mention internships or any work-related experience that you have had at your college.

Such opening lines will make the recruiters want to read more about you.

Also, add your top skills in the first paragraph. You must demonstrate “proof of work” that you can perform the duties needed, so just list all the critical things the employer needs.

Two things that you need to do for this:

  1. Read the job description with the utmost focus.

  2. Ask yourself, “What were the RESULTS of my EFFORTS on previous jobs, internships, or tasks that I have undertaken?”

That is the key to crafting the letter.

A sample template that you can follow:

Hello [Hiring Manager],

Opening Headline with Power Impact Technique

Highlights of my background include:

(Add 3-4 bullet points here)

A small paragraph describing why you want to work with the company.

Your time and consideration are most appreciated.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
