You are NOT an imposter!
Do you ever think, "I'm not qualified for that job," or "They'll quickly realize I don't know what I'm doing"? If so, you're not alone.
This, in very loose terms is called “The Imposter Syndrome”. And google defines it as “self-doubt of intellect, skills, or accomplishments among high-achieving individuals”
Imposter syndrome can sabotage even the most talented individuals.
The good news is, you don't have to control your job search. Here's how to start overcoming it, and it starts by silencing your inner critic.
Tips to silence your inner critic:
Separate fact from feeling: Ask yourself, "Is this negative thought based on evidence, or just fear?"
Challenge the critic: If your inner voice says, "You're going to fail," counter with "I've prepared thoroughly and have valuable skills to offer."
Focus on your strengths: Make a list of your accomplishments and positive qualities. Refer to it often!
Overcoming imposter syndrome is one of the crucial steps you can take on your job search journey. By believing in yourself, you'll project confidence, articulate your skills better, and increase your chances of landing that perfect role.
Avni Barman’s Cheat Sheet for Getting Hired in 30 Days
Avni Barman, Source: Linkedin
Avni Barman is a founder who has a had a long list of companies she has worked with. And in her podcast, Gen She, she highlights the cheat sheet to getting hired within the next 30 days.
1. Change your Location to New York or San Francisco:
Go where the jobs are. Competition is fierce, but so are the opportunities. If you can't relocate, apply the same principle locally - identify areas within your region that are hotbeds for jobs in your field and modify your job search to prioritize those locations.
2. Don’t Apply to Jobs that have been open for 24-48 hours:
You want to be an early applicant! Companies often receive a flood of applications in the first few days. While there may be exceptions, like specific high-skill roles, applying right away gives you a chance to stand out before the hiring manager is overwhelmed with submissions.
3. Have 3 Separate Resumes & Cover Letters:
One-Size does not fit all! Having a strong base resume is essential, but also create a "skills-focused" version outlining transferable skills for various roles. When a particularly exciting job appears, laser-target your resume and cover letter to precisely mirror the requirements stated in the job description.
4. Only Apply to Startups:
If getting hired quickly is your goal, startups can be a great option. Due to their need for rapid growth, decision-making in the hiring process often happens faster. Reach out to the recruiter personally on LinkedIn after applying for the role and you can use tools like Apollo to find out their email and reach out via email as well. Be sure to thoroughly research any startup befor you apply. You can use platforms like Crunchbase for this.
5. Make a Cheat Sheet of Behavorial Interview Questions:
These questions ("Tell me about a time you…" or "Describe a situation where…”) focus on past experiences. Craft a list of common questions and draft thoughtful answers showcasing your achievements. Practicing them aloud will build confidence and help you articulate your successes when those interview questions inevitably arrive.
Important: Use this cheat sheet as a starting point; tailor the specifics to your own job search experience. Results can vary, but applying these strategies will maximize your potential and speed up your journey to a fantastic new job.
Master the ‘Tell me about yourself’ Question
This seemingly simple question is often the first you'll encounter in an interview, and it's your prime opportunity to set the tone and make a lasting impression. Yet, many job seekers fumble with a generic overview of their resume or an awkward personal anecdote.
Here's how to craft a response that highlights your value:
It's NOT an autobiography: Resist the urge to narrate your life story. This question is about where you are NOW professionally, and how that connects to the role you want.
The Formula: Present + Past + Future
Present: Brief statement of your current role and key responsibilities.
Past: One or two relevant achievements showcasing skills critical to your target position.
Future: Conclude with why you're excited about THIS opportunity and how it aligns with your goals.
Showcase Uniqueness
If anyone else in the world could deliver your exact answer, it needs refining. Find the angle that makes YOU memorable. This could be:A Quantifiable Achievement: "I consistently exceed sales quotas by 15%..."
Unique Skill or Passion "...My background in graphic design brings a visual edge to my marketing approach,"
Connection to the Company: "...I've been a loyal customer of [Company] for years and admire your commitment to innovation."
Practice but DON'T Memorize
You want to sound natural, not robotic. Keep a few core points in mind and practice different phrasing variations.Bonus
Match the energy of the interviewer: Mirror their formality or conversational style.
Keep it concise: Aim for 1-2 minutes max. Remember, this is an opening statement, not the whole interview.
End with an invitation: "I'd love to elaborate on my experience with [specific skill] if it's of interest."
